Dutchess Outreach's Fifth Annual Brunch to Raise Funds and Spirits
Dutchess Outreach honored St. John’s Lutheran Church, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and the Samson Familyat the Fifth Annual Brunch at 12 pm Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Rolling Greens at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club in Poughkeepsie.
St. John’s celebrates its 110th Anniversary this year. Since 1901, St. John’s has grown into a vibrant active church with a congregation busy in many and varied spiritual, educational and service activities. St. John’s parishioners have been involved with Dutchess Outreach in a variety of volunteer positions since its inception in 1974. Members have continuously served on the Board of Directors, Fundraising committees, as well as the brunch events and holiday fundraisers. They continually stock the food pantry, provide food gifts as part of their youth projects, and for over 20 years a group has made egg salad sandwiches monthly for the Lunch Box.
Thrivent Financial is a Fortune 500 financial services organization with a unique blend of financial expertise, shared values and community service. It is a faith-based organization called to care for others and is the largest fraternal benefit society in the United States. It relies on its members to carry out its mission of improving lives. As a fraternal benefit society, its common bond is Lutheranism. Members connect to help each other and community in largely self-governing groups called chapters. Financial services offered to members include annuities, mutual funds and investments, insurance, banking and church and institution financing. During 2010, the local Hudson Valley Chapter conducted 22 activities resulting in 4,328 volunteer hours and over $70,000 in funds raised and/or donated to local projects, including Dutchess Outreach.
The Samson Family - Nancy, David and their children Adam and Max— have always believed in “Food Raising”. After moving to Dutchess County in 2002, the Samsons continued to implement programs they had previously developed to feed the hungry. These programs include “Cereal Counts,” which this year collected over 1,500 boxes of breakfast cereals for all ages as well as provided educational materials to local schools; “Can Jam,” a year-round collection of canned foods at Vassar Temple; and “Souper Sale,” when funds collected are used to buy “Chunky” Soups providing much-needed protein options at the Food Pantry. Each year you will also find the Samsons volunteering in the Lunch Box, either as a family or individually.
